Centralia, Pennsylvania (Silent Hill) is considered one of the most haunting places in the United States.
Although the environment on Silent Hill seems to exist only in nightmares, it is a real place with a truly devastating history. Silent Hill, West Virginia, is the central city in Pennsylvania. In May 1962, the town ordered the burning of a local garbage dump to clean up the mess. The fire spread through unsealed tunnels and openings leading to a closed coal mine. Thus the fire that has been burning to this day is still burning.
Firefighters in the area could not control the blaze, and the government quickly evacuated the area for their safety. As in the movie, the air in Centralia is dangerous, and it is recommended that people not be exposed to the environment for a long time. As many left, several remained, hoping the fire would stop. One of the only remaining buildings is a church that is still in use. Silent Hill is very similar as only a few citizens of West Virginia remain and continue to attend church services.
